Mid Summer round up July 2026

 Bore da pawb a croeso.

It's been a while since I manged to find anything new to report so here we go.

Pembrey Coast SSSI habitat improvement project

We are only 14 weeks into the project but already the amazing team of surveyors have wasted no time in searching for some of the elusive insect species that should occur. As ever the weather has not played ball either too wet and windy or the effects of two heatwaves is affecting the habitat, still time to play with and I'm sure when the results are in we will be much informed as to any actions needed to improve habitat.

Barry Stewart, whilst night time surveying for the Strandline Beetle, accompanied by Chris Manley set three moth traps along the dune edge and had incredible results with 583 moths of 99 species !! in addition the traps attracted c1940 beetles of two species; 1700 of which were Hydrobius fuscipes | UK Beetle Recording

Toni our new ranger has been busy with surveying and engagement as well as plotting historical records into, the Geographical Information System, QGIS which will help us compare year on year results.

We have contractors poised to deal with the invasive Japanese Rose, rosa rugosa as well as some Sea Buckthorn, they will also be repairing several kilometres of fence so that grazing can recommence.

With the project running to the end of 2028 I'm sure there will be lots more to report on.

Heatwaves and weather

A mixed spring and early summer, then a heatwave in late June and almost straight into another one this month, has made for what seems, to me, to have been a late spring straight into an untypical summer most noticeably the short lived flowering period of Green Winged and the marsh orchids this year, contrasting with the explosion of Marsh Helleborines which are popping up in places that I have never noticed them before and not just in ones and twos but literally 100's of flower spikes.

Despite the heat there is still a good show of flowers with Purple Loosestrife , Ladies Bedstraw Rest Harrow and Greater Bird's-foot Trefoil looking amazing.
