 Prynhawn da pawb, a Croeso

Pembrey Coast project update.

I am delighted to bring on board Toni as conservation ranger for the Pembrey Burrows LNR and wider project support.

Toni brings a wealth of knowledge having worked with Natural Resources Wales on their, Sands of Life project across Wales including Pembrey Burrows LNR. Toni also worked for the West Wales Biodiversity Information Centre. If you see her about say hi, this is what she drives !

Invertebrate surveys have been slowed down through necessary breaks and poor surveying weather, as well as needing to coincide with activity period of the invert's being surveyed.

We have managed to keep surveying for the Strandline Beetle, with very pleasing results; there seems to be a decent population present on Cefn Sidan with the usual areas, such as the Air Weapons Range and adjacent embryonic dunes holding good numbers, as well as  at the eastern end of the beach where we have recorded more beetles already in 2025 than have been seen in total in the past four years.

The new style refugia have been a particular hit

A Masters, student at UWTSD, is about to start a surveying project never, as far as we can tell, undertaken anywhere in the  Strandline Beetles' worldwide range, to hopefully understand how the beetle moves in its environment and where it disappears too in mid summer, more on this with photos as the project develops.

I feel its been an odd spring, with late movements of wading birds, which should probably be on their breeding grounds in Greenland or further north, such as big flocks Sanderling still on Cefn Sidan many in breeding plumage, the run of winds from a northerly quadrant will have held them up, whilst local breeders such as Ringed Plover have well grown young running around.

We were delighted, once again, to host the BSBI "Glynhir week" at Pembrey Burrows where the weather played ball and the botanists stayed dry, scrutinising every bit of green and as usual turning up a new species for the site, this time it was Geranium pusillum Geranium pusillum : Small-flowered Crane's-bill | NBN Atlas  zoom in on the map to see its Carms distribution.
