What motivates you to get out and experience the coast and countryside?
Do you like the solitude, easy to find on the wide expanse of Cefn Sidan?
Do you prefer company and enjoy joining a group or partaking in a guided walk?

Why is he asking these questions you may be thinking, well it's planning time for the events for 2018, and whilst 132 people took part in last years events attendance at individual events was a bit sporadic. Maybe it was too focussed on Pembrey LNR?

In 2018 we intend to spread the events across as many of the local nature reserves/natural spaces in the county as possible. With a choice of six sites it makes sense to use them if we can.


Carmarthenshire Local Nature Reserves
West - East  Pembrey, Ashpits, Pwll Lagoon, North Dock, Morfa Berwig
and in the NE of the county Ynys Dawela Nature Park
There are currently 14 planned events spread over April to September (dates to be confirmed), with two programmes, April, May and June; and then July, August and September, with some planned to coincide with the school holidays.

If you have attended any of the events over the last two years do you have any suggestions for 2018?

    I think spreading the events over all the local nature reserves is a good idea and, as has been done in the past, to have themes to the walks - whilst not being exclusive - is useful to provide focus and to enable people to do a little research on the theme/topic beforehand if they want to. If topical things can be included this can add to the interest, subject to the constraint that schedules need to be done in advance. I look forward to attending the events in 2018.

    Yes, by all means spread the net to include Ashpits. Plenty of ducks, grebes, swans and land recovering from its industrial past. Perhaps a bit of history of the area. Why is it a LNR (what is an LNR ?). Need to check paths are passable. Reasonable access from car park (or the Industrial Est.). Pwll Lagoon (by the pumping station ?, don't remember seeing any LNR notices) perhaps similar but a bit less to offer and less convenient to access. Both are more "local" than Pembrey or Morfa to Pwll, Sandy & Llanelli residents and might attract more local interest. North Dock might be too accessible i.e. people often go there now, just for a walk, is there enough "extra" that a specialist could show them to justify the effort.
    Getting people to nearer LNR's eg Ashpits, might generate interest and draw people out to Pembrey and Morfa as follow up visits. Will require planning but could be worth it.

  Prynhawn da pawb,  I hope you have all weathered storm Kathleen. It's been a heck of a week personally,  I'm hoping this coming week will be better. Well storm Kathleen is the last weather event we need but sadly any meagre control we may have had over our climate has long run out. On a brighter note though a phone call from the county bird recorder set me off to Sandy Water Park, (SWP) where 13 Arctic Terns, 2  Little Gulls and a mixed flock of 2-300+ mostly Sand Martins and a few Swallows were playing in the wind. Little Gull If you're up to speed with the last few months then you will know that we have installed bird nesting rafts on SWP and at Ffynnon Helyg near Pwll, with a view of hopefully attracting  Common Terns to nest !!. OK its a coincidence but a nice one Earlier in the week a Little Ringed Plover was seen flying over the SWP raft, what's that saying, build and they will come! SLOW WORM fest..

  Croseo pawb,  Another busy week which has kept me on my toes, as usual, I've dealt with fish poaching, illegal vehicle intrusion, and odd things going on with a "Badger Sett". The relevant authorities are dealing with the poaching and vehicle issues whilst I have investigated the "goings on". Nothing of concern as there is no Badger sett just an outlier burrow probably an old boar Badger or one of last years youngsters pushed out from the main sett, quite common at this time of year when the sow badgers will be giving birth. Our amazing volunteers have been out and about, today they were at Morfa Berwig LNR, where I joined them this afternoon for their first reptile survey of the year, a very productive survey with 16 refugia to check and a total of 22  Slow worms, five Grass snakes, although two were out basking away from the refugia and just one Common Lizard. Carmarthenshire - Did you Know?

  Well its ages since I've found time to write a blog post apologies for that but here we go with some interesting facts and personal thoughts about Carmarthenshire wildlife, and a bit further afield. Did you know: That we have a County plant, Whorled Caraway, Carum verticullatum ; found in typical Rhos pasture a feature of the Carmarthenshire landscape though often under threat from changes in agricultural practices Did you Know: That there are 311 species of birds recorded as being seen in the county, a respectable figure by an measure, amongst the rarities are Blue-winged Teal, a species from North America, Black Stork an European species which itself has a limited range.
